SUNRISE AIRWAYS AND HAITI MINISTRY OF TOURISM

ANNOUNCE MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING

New agreement outlines mutual support partnership to boost tourism arrivals to Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – (March 5, 2014) – Sunrise Airways, Haiti’s newest homegrown airline, and the Haiti Ministry of Tourism announced today that they have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to boost tourism arrivals to Haiti.

Under terms of the MOU, Sunrise Airways and the Ministry of Tourism will work in close collaboration to host familiarization trips to Haiti undertaken by international travel journalists, travel agents, business development partners, and other interested parties keen on promoting or investing in the country’s tourism industry.

Philippe Bayard, President of Sunrise Airways, commented on the MOU, saying: “Tourism is already an important part of our improving economy, but the potential exists now more than ever for Haiti to stand up and be counted among the leading leisure travel destinations in the Caribbean. Haiti is most certainly open for tourism business. We at Sunrise Airways are excited to take an active role in proving just that to the world.”

Stéphanie Balmir Villedrouin, Haiti’s Minister of Tourism, echoed Mr. Bayard’s sentiments, saying: “Just as we’ve built tremendous momentum in growing Haiti’s tourism sector in recent months, so too has Sunrise Airways made great strides in elevating our aviation sector, opening up new markets in neighboring countries and earning raves with their professional service and staunch commitment to safety. We couldn’t be happier than to partner with them to continue moving Haiti forward.”

New hotel construction and redevelopment programs have combined with airport expansion initiatives, new hospitality education and training programs, the advent of a dedicated tourism police force, and the opening of several new visitor attraction centers at key historical sites to revitalize Haiti’s tourism industry. All told, current tourism sector investment by the Government of Haiti and foreign investors exceeds US$258 million.

Sunrise Airways launched scheduled passenger service on December 20, 2012 with one domestic route operating between Port-au-Prince and Cap Haitien. From there, the airline expanded overseas, launching its first international route to Providenciales, Turks & Caicos in August 2013. Additional international routes to Holguín, Cuba and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic soon followed in October and November, respectively.

In addition to inaugurating new routes across the Western Caribbean in 2013, Sunrise Airways also achieved several significant corporate milestones underscoring the airline’s commitment to safety and customer satisfaction. Most notably, in July 2013 Sunrise Airways became the first-ever Haitian airline to join the Flight Safety Foundation, an international non-profit organization whose sole purpose is to provide impartial, independent, expert safety guidance and resources for the aviation and aerospace industry.

Sunrise Airways is also the only Haitian airline with its own dedicated Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility located at Cibao International Airport (STI) in Santiago, Dominican Republic.

Travel Review / A Weekend in Providenciales Turks & Caicos

This past weekend I had the opportunity to spend some time in Providenciales Turks & Caicos. Sunrise Airways has daily flight service to Providenciales Turks & Caicos . If you are coming from Port-au-Prince you get on the first flight to Cap Haitien and from Cap Haitien you breeze through immigration onto your connecting international flight with out having to worry about the hassle of baggage transfer, Sunrise handles that all quite smoothly. When you arrive in Providenciales you can then catch a cab to your hotel or if you book through one of our travel agents / tour partners in Providenciales they can set up your entire trip for you so you can simply relax.

I stayed at the Club Med, it is a bigger resort there and has a nice beach and many activities. If you are looking for an adventure or to have some privacy I would recommend one of the smaller hotels in the area. The photos below are from the beach front outside Club Med , the beach connects to pretty much everything you need on that side of the bay. If you want to get off the resort and experience some local culture you can head over to Ricki’s which just to your right of Club Med on the beach, they have a great conch salad.

I had the opportunity to spend some time with my friend Morgan over there who is a local , this was great for me because  I got to experience Providenciales through her eyes. Morgan and her partner Greg run Surf Side Ocean Academy an outdoor adventure school offering camps for kids and teens, eco adventures for families,  professional swim lessons and babysitting services.

Are you a fan of sea food? If so the Turks & Caicos islands are the place to be for you. They have an abundance of conch , you can have conch in a variety of ways… I tried 5 different conch dishes over the weekend, two were similar but pretty tasty. I was able to photograph the fishermen on the beach preparing the conch on site to give to the beach bar and grill. I would recommend trying a conch salad with a nice white wine or strawberry daiquiri .

In terms of local souvenirs there was a few shops but my favourite was right on the beach run by a lady named Porcha. All of her items were handcrafted locally and some of the materials had to be imported but none the less I managed to find a cute stone beaded bracelet to take home.

I would strongly recommend Providenciales for a weekend getaway from Haiti and if you can manage it take a whole week and unwind. The beaches are amazing, the locals are kind and welcoming and with daily flight service with Sunrise Airways you can travel with ease. Turks & Caicos is perfect for all types of travellers , singles, newlyweds looking for romance , seniors and families .

To book your trip you can reach out to Chloe of Marco Travel in Providenciales  to book a flight or if you are looking to book a package you can reach out to Ben at Caicu Naniki Tours, both are working directly with Sunrise. If you have any questions feel free to call 509.2811.2222 or email reservations@sunriseairways.net .

Day 2 San-Souci Palace: Northern Haiti is rich with history and culture, part of the tour includes a trip to the San Souci Palace  which was the royal residence of King Henri the first (better known as Henri Christophe) of Haiti, Queen Marie-Louise and their two daughters. It was the most important of nine palaces built by the king, as well as fifteen châteaux, numerous forts, and sprawling summer homes on his twenty plantations.Construction of the palace started in 1810 and was completed in 1813.

Citadelle Laferrière: On your way up to the Citadelle you can either hike or take a horse, just let Chloe and Ben know which you prefer. The Citadelle Laferrière or, Citadelle Henry Christophe, or simply the Citadelle (in English, spelled Citadel), is a large mountaintop fortress in northern Haiti, approximately 17 miles (27 km) south of the city of Cap-Haïtien and five miles (8 km) uphill from the town of Milot. It is the largest fortress in the Americas and was designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a World Heritage Site in 1982—along with the nearby Sans-Souci Palace. The mountaintop fortress has itself become an icon of Haiti. The Citadel was built by Henri Christophe, a key leader during the Haitian slave rebellion, after Haiti gained independence from France at the beginning of the 19th century. Worried about slipping and hurting your self on the hike up? Chloe & Ben have partnered with the local firefighters in Cap Haitien to accompany you up to the Citadelle in the event of any emergency, you can truly relax and enjoy your expedition…not to mention Ben has been doing medical missions in Haiti for the past decade.

After the journey to the San-Souci Palace and the Citadelle Laferrière you will stop for a delicious lunch at Lakay back in Cap Haitien.

Labadee: This is a special feature that was offered on our excursion and not normally a part of the tour. If you want to add on the Labadee trip to your package let Ben and Chloe know and they can make the arrangements for you. We headed over to Labadee shortly after  our lunch lunch . When we arrived in Labadee we took a boat ride on the ocean over to a  tiny and vibrant village where you can experience Haitian culture first hand. Buy a local beer and take a walk with your group, but don’t forget to say hello to everyone you encounter in the village it is after all a Haitian custom!
